The New Mental Health Crisis Hotline {9-8-8}

The Biden Administration has created a strategy to help address the nationwide mental health crisis by creating a Mental Health Hotline. Mental health has become even more of a concern since the pandemic, and has drawn many attention because of the thousands of people who have died of an overdose and by suicide.

The Health and Human Services (HHS) announced recently that it will award a $1 million grant to help the launching of the 9-8-8 hotline here in Nevada.

The hotline will launch nationwide this summer, and is slated to be as effective as 9-1-1. If someone has a mental health challenge, or suffering from serious distress, instead of calling 9-1-1, call 9-8-8 for immediate help.

  1. Sounds like a good idea to help people :-)

    I hope they can implement it by summer ^_^

  2. Hopefully the hotline is better with answering calls, because I have seen other ones put people on hold or put them on a waitlist.

  3. I definitely think this is a start.

    Having said that, we're going to need way more than this.

    I honestly believe the United States has a mental health crisis that is basically unrivaled anywhere else in the world, and it's going to take resources to match if the U.S. is going to resolve this issue. It's going to require an entire overhaul of how we approach mental health and treatment, and unfortunately, it's going to take time. Right now, people aren't ready for it.

    This whole situation has been decades in the making, and it won't be fixed overnight. The hotline is a nice contribution to solving the problem, though.

  6. I agree with many of our classmates comments. This is a great thing happening, but I feel like the mental health crisis here will not be handled or fixed until the way our society is run changes.

  7. That sounds like a really helpful idea.

  8. Glad to hear they're helping in some way, but it'd be great if they actually did something that helps first hand instead of providing support hot lines. I feel like we aren't taking a proactive stance, more like a reactive stance.

  9. Glad that the number is short! 10 digit numbers can be hard to remember especially when under a lot of stress or pressure.

  11. this is amazing news! I hope there can be established a less vocal one, because I know from personal experience as well as told to me by others that phone calls can be incredibly stressful in of itself and actually discourages many people from doing what they want to, such as seek help.

  12. That's a great start. Often times we just need someone to talk to, unfortunately all you may have is toxic people surrounding you.
